Our model is simple and intentional.
Dogs live in foster homes throughout Nebraska and Iowa
We specialize in German Shorthaired Pointers and understand the realities of the breed
We prioritize good matches over quick placements
We are 100 percent volunteer run, so resources go directly to the dogs
This approach takes more effort, but it leads to better outcomes and fewer failed adoptions.
Every dog comes to us with a different background. Some are well trained and ready to go. Others need time, structure, medical care, or patience to adjust.
Because our dogs live in foster homes, their profiles reflect real life behavior, not kennel stress.
German Shorthaired Pointers are smart, athletic, and intense. They are not a good fit for every household.
Adopting from GPPR may be right for you if:
You are prepared for a high energy sporting breed
You understand rescue dogs may need training, time, or medical support
You are comfortable with a thorough adoption process
You value long term success over convenience
If you are looking for an easy, low effort dog, we are likely not the right rescue for you. That honesty matters to us.

We cannot help dogs without foster homes. Fosters provide a safe place for dogs to land while we learn who they are and what they need.
You do not need to be perfect or experienced with every behavior challenge. You do need to be realistic, communicative, and willing to be part of a team.
As a foster, GPPR:
Covers veterinary care
Provides guidance and support
Works with you to find the right permanent home
You provide the day-to-day care, structure, and patience that allow dogs to succeed.
Rescue is expensive. Veterinary care, training, transportation, and emergency needs add up quickly.
Donations allow us to say yes to dogs who need help and ensure that cost is never the reason a dog is turned away.
Great Plains Pointer Rescue is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit serving Nebraska and Iowa. Our work is made possible by fosters, adopters, volunteers, and supporters who believe that careful placement and honest expectations matter.
Together, we give German Shorthaired Pointers the chance at stable, lasting homes.
