Odin is a 55-pound neutered male German Shorthaired Pointer who will turn 8 years old in May. He is healthy, affectionate, and full of the playful personality the breed is known for. Odin needs a foster home by the end of March as his family prepares for a major life transition.

About Odin

Odin is a people oriented, affectionate dog who loves being part of the household. He bonds closely with his people and enjoys being wherever the action is. Like many German Shorthaired Pointers, he has a playful, energetic personality and thrives when he has opportunities to run, play fetch, and stay active.

He also has a softer side. Odin loves to cuddle and burrow under blankets, and his family says he will happily curl up in your arms and sleep like a baby.

He knows basic commands like sit and responds well when engaged. One of his quirks is that he spins in circles when he gets excited, especially when he knows it is time to go outside.

Health and Behavior

Odin is extremely healthy with no known medical issues.

He is house trained and previously had free roam of the home during the day without problems. Earlier in life he was crate trained and treated his crate as a safe space, though he has not used one regularly in several years.

In new environments he may initially mark while adjusting, but with correction he settles into the routine of the home.

Other Dogs

Odin generally does well with other dogs and has not shown aggression in normal interactions.

The only management needed is around food. He prefers to eat separately from other dogs and can be protective if another dog approaches his food bowl. Feeding him in a separate space resolves the issue.

Outside of mealtime, he is usually more interested in people or playing fetch than interacting with other dogs.

Cats

Odin has had very limited exposure to cats. In the one interaction reported, he showed curiosity but no aggression. Because of his limited experience, slow and supervised introductions would be recommended.

Children

Odin has done well with children and has never shown aggression. Because he is an energetic dog, he can sometimes get a little excitable during play, but it comes from enthusiasm rather than any negative behavior.

Thunderstorms and Fireworks

Like many dogs, Odin does not like loud noises such as fireworks or thunder. During storms he may look for a quiet place to hide.

Why He Needs a Foster

Odin has been deeply loved by his family. However, their life circumstances have changed significantly, and they are preparing to welcome a newborn soon. His family recognizes that a high energy working breed like a GSP needs consistent exercise, engagement, and time that they will no longer be able to provide.

Their goal is to help Odin land in a situation where he can continue to live an active, fulfilling life.

Ideal Foster Home

Odin would thrive in a home that:

• Is familiar with the German Shorthaired Pointer breed or other high energy dogs
• Can provide regular exercise and activity
• Is willing to feed separately if other dogs are present
• Wants an affectionate dog who enjoys being close to his people

Odin is a loyal, goofy, loving companion who wants to be part of a household and included in daily life. A foster home will help us keep him out of the shelter system and set him up for success in his next chapter.
